How We Got Here, a note from Jessica Horgan, RDA's Executive Director
RDA was founded in 2016 with the belief that everyone, regardless of ability to pay, should have the opportunity to pursue high-quality and comprehensive dance education.
We started our journey at the United Methodist Church on S. Washington Street in August 2016. Our studio was small, but strong. In that first semester, we had 121 dancers participating in 49 classes, and offered a whopping 7 performing ensembles. Many of these original dancers are still with us, while others have graduated and become our first class of alumni.
It felt like a golden age, a time of creative exploration and unending hope for the possibilities of what RDA might grow to be. By 2019, we had gained a strong reputation among the community and were a recognizable brand.
Then Covid-19 hit and everything changed. The Festival was cancelled with one week of rehearsals left, and suddenly we were all dancing in boxes on Zoom. Our founding location, and home for four years, was abruptly sold. It was a challenging time, but we made it through with the help of friends and supporters.
By Fall 2020 we were able to resume in-person classes. We moved our operation to the Annex and the stage at the Music Hall, where all in-person shows had come to a complete and deafening hault. Through our efforts, we were able to rebuild RDA from the ground up for a second time. As our numbers grew to 200+, we found ourselves at three, and then four, locations. We continued our search for a new home.
Now, we have found a space to call our own, and we need your help.
In our 8 years of operation, RDA has:
- Served 923 dancers and their families
- Employed 102 faculty, substitute faculty, & guest artists
- Awarded $244,189 in Financial Aid to dancers in need
- Held classes at 9 locations around Tarrytown
Help us secure a future for RDA! We need active donors and passionate volunteers to advance our mission to the next phase.
With your support, we will continue to grow in excellence and accessibility. Please consider lending your support in whatever way you are able to. Connect with us at [email protected] to see how you can make your impact today.
With appreciation,
Jessica
